How to structure your personal statement.

Your personal statement should be 2/3s about academic achievements and 1/3 other. Your first paragraph needs to grab the readers attention. Universities read thousands of applications; make yours one that stands out. Perhaps the use of an anecdote might draw in the reader, or a particular experience you have had that has made you choose this subject. This first paragraph is all about WHY you chose this subject.Your second paragraph should focus on academic things you have done in relation to this subject. What books have you read to further your knowledge? More specifically, what has this book taught you about this subject? You should talk about any societies you have joined as a part of this subject or any clubs you attend or run to further yours and other peoples’ knowledge of this subject. This is likely to be your biggest paragraph and you might do well to split it up into two paragraphs to make it easier to read. For example, if you’re doing combined honours, equally split your paragraph for each of your subjects. Your third paragraph is where you bring in all the things you have done throughout your life that have given you skills and knowledge for a lifetime. Talk about what your hobbies have taught you IN RELATION to your subject. Make sure it is all relevant to what you will be studying. If you have had a part-time job, talk about the skills you have learnt. Showcase yourself in the best light. Your final paragraph should summarise all you have talked about, but make sure you end the essay with something memorable again. The idea is to frame the personal statement with a memorable start and finish so that you stand out from other candidates. Good luck!
