How can I get a good mark on my English Literature Essay

Getting a good mark on an English Literature essay is about knowing your texts, using your revision and structuring you answer in the best way possible. To fully prepare I would recommend reading the texts at least twice and on the second turn annotating the texts either on the page, or on a different document. The annotations should be made using the class notes. This will not only allow you to become more familiar with the texts but it will also allow you to consolidate your learning which is important for any exam situation.
In terms of the essay, then, I would recommend a strong introduction which sets out an argument and a structure for the overall essay. This can be done at the beginning or at the end, whichever is comfortable for you. The body of the essay should focus on making 3 main points (maximum) and considering the AOs that you may have for GCSE. For example AQA want students to use textual interpretations and maintain a critical style for AO1. AO2 goes on to talk about analysis of Form, Structure and Language, AO3 stipulates an awareness of context. Finally, AO4 (perhaps the easiest marks to get) is using a range of vocabulary and correct grammar. Incorporating these 4 AOs somewhere in your answer will allow you to maximise your marks and prove to the examiner that you have revised and re-read your texts. Finally, a short conclusion summing up your main argument would be great! I think all these things combined will form a great answer for GCSE English Lit - be sure to check your mark scheme for specific things like AOs.
