How do you decide whether to use 'essere' or 'avere' as an auxiliary verb?

There are certain general rules for these auxiliary verbs: verbs that take on a direct object usually use 'AVERE'. Instead verbs that do not take a direct object but rather refer to a movement or state of being usually use 'ESSERE'.
