When discussing how you would interpret an extract as a performer, what kind of things should I include?

Firstly it is important to consider the style of the play that the extract is taken from, and the intentions of the playwright. If for example it was a naturalistic play, such as Polly Stenham’s ‘That Face’ is would be wise to mention a practioner or practitioners that would influence your work as a performer, such as Constantin Stanivlaski or Sanford Meisner. It is also worth explaining your overall interpretation of the character in the entire play and specifically within the extract you will be exploring, as you can use this interpretation to justify each of the acting choices that you will discuss in your answer. When explaining your specific acting choices it is important to discuss specific key moments within the extract in detail and justify each of your decisions. You should talk about both physical and vocal choices. Physical choices can include: proxemics, gesture, facial expression, movement across the stage and positioning on the stage. Vocal choices can include: accent, modulation, pitch, articulation, inflexion and pace. As well as relating each of these decisions to your interpretation of the character and the playwright’s intentions it is important to mention the intended effects each decision will have on the audience.
