Briefly describe a study of social influence. (4 marks)

The student can choose any relevant studies to answer this question, but I would recommend the students to use either Asch, Milgram or Zimbardo. The student should use the following structure to answer the question: 1 mark -> participants/screening process, 2 marks -> Procedure, 1 mark-> Results. The following is a sampler answer using Asch's study: In a controlled lab experiment, Asch(1951) found 50 male participants to participants in a study investigating conformity. (1 mark) They were asked to identity which one of the 3 sample lines had the same length as the target line (1 mark). The participants did the experiment in a group of 8, however, 7 were confederates. The participant would state their answer after the previous 7 confederates have stated theirs (1 mark). On average, about one third (32%) of the participants who were placed in this situation went along and conformed with the clearly incorrect majority on the critical trials. (1 mark)The student should be reminded of the following: 1.) Do not include details such as evaluations, since the question did not ask for it. 2.) Be precise and concise. There could be a lot of details in one study, but try to incorporate the most important elements into your answer. 3.) Select the study that you are the most familiar with, since you will be able to impress the examiner with the accuracy and details of your answer.
