The heart could be compared to a pump but the key differences lie in its exquisite ability to self control. Through local mechanisms (e.g. Frank-starling mechanism) and external mechanisms (e.g. neurol or humoral/endocrine control) the function of the heart is altered in order to provide positive and negative feedback and maintain pump functionality.
