Outline the main features of the Working Memory Model?

The working memory model (WMM) was put forward by Baddeley and Hitch. The model consists of 4 main features; central executive, phonological loop, visual-spatial sketchpad and the episodic buffer. The first feature is the central executive. This monitors incoming information and allocates slave systems to relevant tasks. The phonological loop controls all auditory information and preserves the order in which this information arrives in. This feature can be sub divided into the phonological store and articulatory control system. The phonological store, stores words you hear. Whereas, the articulatory control system allows for maintenance rehearsal. The visual-spatial sketchpad stores visual and spatial information when required. This feature is also sub-divided into the visual cashe and inner scribe. The visual cashe stores visual data and the inner scribe records the arrangement of objects in the visual field. The episodic buffer is a temporary storage for information. This integrates visual, spatial and verbal information.
