Sue has 2 cats. Each cat eats 1 4 of a tin of cat food each day. Sue buys 8 tins of cat food. Has Sue bought enough cat food to feed her 2 cats for 14 days? You must show how you get your answer.

Initially we must work out the rate at which the tin food is consumed by 2 cats, so we multiply 1/4 (tin food per day for 1 cat) by 2(number of cats), which equals 2/4, so both cats consume 2/4 of a tin per day. (2/4 can also be simplified to 1/2).For the following step, there are two methods: Method 1: work out the tins needed for 14 days Method 2: work out how long the food Sue has will last for Method 1:Facts: 1/2 tin consumed per day, food needed for 14 days Solution: 14x(1/2)=7 Conclusion: Sue needs 7 cans for 14 days, as 7<8, Sue has enough cat food Method 2:Facts: 1/2 tin consumed per day, Sue has 8 tins Solution: 8/ (1/2)=8x(2/1)=8x2=16 Conclusion:Sue's tin food will last for 16 days, so as 16>14, Sue has enough cat food
