Why is turnout lower for 18-25 year olds than other age groups?

There are a few reasons voting behaviour trends show lower turnout for younger generations. Younger voters do not experience the same degree of social class ties to political parties, for example working class ties with Labour have lessened since the decline in Trade Union influence; this might lead to younger voters to feel more apathetic towards parties. The impact of social media is also noteworthy, with so many opinions and so-called ‘fake news’ younger voters generally seem to find politicians less trustworthy which can contribute to their indifference to their policy promises. Politicians also tend to target policies towards older generations whom there are more of and who are more likely to vote, which perpetuates this issue as younger voters may feel forgotten by politicians, though Labours more recent campaigns have sought to change this.
