Define public service broadcasting (PSB) and identify its key elements.

Ever since the early days of broadcasting in Britain, it has been positioned as a service with a duty to ‘inform, educate and entertain’ the audience as opposed to serving the commercial interests of media owners. It is financed by the public.How does PSB achieve that?1) By developing high public service broadcasting standards of availability, impartiality, and disinterest.2) By paying attention to minority interests and representation. -> the ‘voice of the nation’3) By providing a counter-reaction to ‘vulgar mass entertainment approach of the film industry and the popular press’, as well as the Americanised television standards (Lambert, 1982: 5).Representation, public interest, quality and innovation are important factors of the public service broadcasting.
