Solve the simultaneous equations: x^2 + 8x + y^2; x - y = 10.

Label the two equations.

x2 + 8x + y2 = 84 (1)
x - y = 10 (2)

Rearrange (2) to get y = x - 10 and substitute for y in (1) to get x2 + 8x + (x - 10)

Find the interval for which x^2 - 7x + 10 </= 0

Factorise the quadratic by finding two numbers that add to make -7 and multiply to make 10. (i.e. -2 and -5). So x^2  -  7x +  10 = (x - 2)(x - 5) </= 0. Sketch the quadratic to see where it is negativ...
