Solve the simultaneous equations: 4x+y=25 and x-3y=16

Lets first give the equations names.

4x+y=25 (A)

x-3y=16 (B)

We want to get the equations so that they have either the same number of x's or same number of y's. So let's multiply equa...

You are given the function f(x)=x^3-x^2-7x+3, and that x=3 is a root of f(x)=0. Find the exact values of the other 2 roots. (6 marks)

First step is to realise that as x=3 is a root of f(x)=0, then we can use (x-3) as a factor of f(x). A really good method to use to find what (fx)/(x-3) gives is Synthetic Division. Using this method we t...

The area of a rectangle is 8cm^2. It has a length of (3x+1)cm and a width of (2x+5)cm. Work out the value of x.

We know that the equation of the area of a rectangle is width times by length. Therefore:

8=(3x+1)(2x+5)

If we multiply out the brackets we get:

8=(6x2+2x+15x+5), thus, 8=6...
