Festival: best ones to go to and how to volunteer

It’s summer, which means its festival season! Festivals are a great way to spend a mini holidays away with your friends, listen to amazing music and, meet lots of new and exciting people. A great way to get involved in a festival is to volunteer, read below on how to get involved.

Which festivals should you go to?

  1. Lovebox
  2. BST
  3. Bestival
  4. Womad
  5. Boomtown
  6. Shambala
  7. Wilderness
  8. SW4

Research the music, atmosphere and, vibe of each festival to see which one is best for you. Going to more than one festival can start to get expensive, which is why you should start thinking about volunteering.

How can I volunteer?

Volunteering at a festival means that you get in for free! I always volunteer with Oxfam because each volunteer raises about £400 for the charity. You can sign up now as a steward, campaigner or, shop volunteer.  You have to work 3 x 8 hour shifts over the weekend; you’ll mostly be doing crowd control but if you’re lucky, you may get posted at a stage and get to watch acts for your whole shift! Also, for each shift, you get a food voucher for a free meal at the Oxfam food truck which is on the Oxfam camp site. Having a separate campsite means that you have hot water, phone charging, nicer showers and, a safer environment to sleep in.

Other festival volunteer schemes include:

How to stay safe?

Festivals don’t have to be as dangerous as their image perceives. They are a place where you can enjoy yourself  immensely as long as you are aware of what’s going on. Stay with your friends at all time. It can be very difficult to find someone at a festival because they are often in fields with very little phone signal. Keep away from those performing illegal activity and keep a look out for stewards and security staff that are posted around the festival so you know where to go when you need help.

Have fun!
