🧠 Why are some subjects harder?

There’s lots of reasons that a subject might be harder, both statistically and by perception:

  • Assessment structure: Subjects like modern foreign languages and sciences often have complex assessments, including listening, practicals, and problem-solving tasks.
  • Grading standards: Historical grading practices have led to more severe grading in certain subjects, prompting regulatory bodies to adjust standards for fairness.
  • Student cohort: Subjects with a higher proportion of high-attaining students can appear more challenging due to the competitive nature of grading.

Understanding how difficult GCSE and A Level subjects may be, can help you make an informed choice about what subjects, or subject mix you want to take further. While some subjects are statistically more challenging, passion and dedication while help you success – so don’t underestimate yourself!
