Which verbs are conjugated with être in compound tenses (e.g. Perfect tense, Pluperfect tense)

Answer:
There are 13 main verbs which are conjugated with the verb être in compound tenses, and they can be remembered using the acronym, MR VANS TRAMPED

  •  These verbs are
Monter (to go up, ascend), Rester (to stay),Venir (to come), Arriver (to arrive at, to happen/occur), Naître (to be born), Sortir (to exit, to go out), Tomber (to fall), Retourner (to return, to turn around), Aller (to go),Mourir (to die), Partir (to leave), Entrer (to enter), Descendre (to go down)
      - These verbs are commonly known as verbs of movement, or a changing of state (e.g. to be born/ to die), and they are also intransitive verbs, this means that they do not require a direct object to complete their meaning (e.g. I stay, I go, I fall)
  • It is also important to remeber that with verbs taking être in the compound tense, the past participle of the main verb must agree with the subject of the sentence.
  • These verbs can also appear in different compound forms, when a prefix is placed before the root verb. Examples of this are Revenir (to come back, to return) Remonter (to go back up, to climb back up)
