What picture of Italian society is conveyed by Webster in the first two acts of 'The White Devil'?

It's really important to think about what key areas the examiner wants you to focus on. For example, you need to demonstrate detailed critical analysis of how language, form and the structure of the play creates the picture to the reader of an immoral and Machiavellian society. What imagery and symbolism does the author use?  Remember use of technical terms is a big marking point. Next, think about the characters... How do they contribute to the picture of a morally corrupt community? What are their actions? How does the author describe them? Once a handful of examples have been given to show your understanding of the dark and ruthless nature of Italian society at this time, move on to drawing your points together... Can you compare this text to any other texts which have similar themes? This will earn you extra marks in comparison to other students. Also, any final comments about how the play would have been received by readers in the 16th century compared to now.  Can you notice any links between society then and society now?
