How can I 'upgrade' my level of French ?

A good way to upgrade your level of French and avoid using « être » and « avoir » every sentence would be to make consistent vocabulary lists every week. You could use a notebook and write down every new word you learn every week in class or during homework using different coloured pens for verbs, adjectives etc. At the end of the week read over all the new words to try to remember them, and of course, use them.

In the meantime, here are a few tips :

For « être » and « avoir », there are a few other verbs you can use that have a similar meaning.

The « verbes d’état » are a good replacement for « être » : sembler, apparaître, exister, ressembler…

And instead of using « avoir » you can also use « posséder », « détenir » or « éprouver ».

For example : J’ai de la peine ==> J’éprouve de la peine.

J’ai une voiture rouge ==> Je possède une voiture rouge.

Another good way to upgrade your French level is to change your sentence structure :

Let’s take the basic sentence « J’ai mal au dos ». Here, you could make « dos » the subject of your sentence and say « Mon dos me fait souffrir ». That way you can avoid the use of avoir altogether.

Another example : Il est vraiment fou ! ==> Sa folie m’effraye!
