Explain the events that occur in cells that result in the production of genetically identical nuclei (8 marks)

  1. This process of events is called mitosis (1)

  2. Mitosis includes these stages: Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase/Cytokinesis (1)

  3. DNA replication occurs in Interphase (1)

  4. Prophase - chromosomes supercoil and nuclear membranes break down (1)

  5. Metaphase - chromosomes align themselves at the equator and the spindle fibres attach themselves to the centromeres (2)

  6. Anaphase - spindle fibres pull chromosomes to opposite poles (1)

  7. Telophase - nuclear membrane forms again and cytokinesis splits new cells into two (2)
