What is the geographical definition of globalisation?

The expansion and intensification of social relations and consciousness across world-time and world-space. It is the process by which businesses and organisations operate on a multi-national scale, characterised by increased financial transactions, transport technologies and population increase.

Globalisation can be understood in an:

  • Economic sense; the intensification and stretching of economic connections across the globe - characterised by the growth of TNC's and role of international economic institutions like the IMF and World Bank.

-Political sense; intensification and expansion of political interrelations across the globe - demise of the modern nation state, intergovernmental organisations and creation of a global citizen.

-Cultural sense; tension between sameness and difference in the emerging global culture - homogenisation of society?

-Ecological sense; the impact of growth of globalisation on ecological issues - interdepenence of the planet.
