'Germans benefited from Nazi rule in the years 1933-1939'. Discuss.

Many German citizens did benefit from Nazi rule, which brought an end to depression for many of the German population. Under Nazi rule, unemployment levels decreased significantly as a result of the National Labour Service and conscription, with unemployment decreasing from 5 million to under a million between 1933 and 1939. Also, many German businesses benefited, due to a nationalistic encouragement to use and support German business as opposed to foreign business or department stores. Nazi rule saw an end to depression for many groups who had previously suffered such as farmers, who were given significance and responsibility by the Nazi party. The general standard of living increased for many people, as depression was brought to an end, employment levels rose and working conditions improved. Equally, Nazi rule encouraged a great deal of pride and nationalism amongst the population of Germany, who began to feel a sense of strength and unity again after the humiliation of the Treaty of Versailles. German children were also occupied and educated through the Hitler Youth, giving them an important role in German society. However, this prosperity was not the case for the entire German population, with minority groups and those seen as 'non-Aryan' suffering greatly. Such groups were seen as imperfect, and the Nazi party did not recognise their role in the future of Germany, including Communists, Gypsies, Homosexuals, and above all Jews. These minority groups were significantly discriminated against, with events such as the passing of the Nuremberg Laws in 1935 and Kristallnacht in 1938. Those who did not benefit from Nazi rule were forced to sacrifice their freedom, control and democracy, as well as putting up with constant discriminatory violence and fear, calling into question the extent to which the German population can be said to have benefited from Nazi rule.
