Assess the view that Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) did not effectively address women's liberation during the 1980s.

LGSM offered an opportunity for issues to be raised which had long plagued both the Left and Gay liberation groups. One such issue was that of women’s involvement and its recognition. Both the Left and the Gay Liberation movement were guilty of both excluding women and when they were involved, not fully acknowledging the value of their involvement. In a sense, LGSM was no different. From its formation there were concerns raised over how safe of a space it was for women and how inclusive it was for them. So much were the concerns that a breakaway group, Lesbians Against Pit Closures, formed. However, despite all of this LGSM actually showed real awareness about these issues and even tried to do something about it. The extent to which they were successful is debatable but the fact of the matter is that they did try to combat an issue which long beleaguered the gay movement. LGSM showed great mindfulness of the intersections of oppressions, be this gender, class, race or sexuality. For the time such awareness of these issues was incredibly forward thinking. Once again LGSM proved to be a stepping stone in a longer process of liberation within a liberation movement itself.
