When should I use "tu" and "vous"?

The words “tu” and “vous” both translate to “you” in English. In English, one can use “you” to address any person or number of people whereas in French a distinction is made according to whom one is talking to. Basically, there are different types of “you” depending on who one is addressing. ·     The first distinction between “tu” and “vous” is according to the number of people you are addressing. If you are talking to more than one person, you must always use “vous”. “Vous” is essentially the plural form of “you”. ·     However, when you are talking to one person, the terms “tu” and “vous” can both be used, this depends on the social situation that you are in. A second distinction is therefore to be made according to the social situation one is in. “Tu” is used in an informal social situation whereas “vous” is used in a formal social situation. “Tu” --> informal situation indicating intimate or amicable relations. Generally used for family, friends, colleagues… “Vous” --> formal situation indicating respect or distant relations. Generally used for strangers, teachers, older people… For example, o  Hello Sir, how are you?        -->      Bonjour Monsieur, comment allez-vous? o  Hey mate, how are you?     -->    Salut mon pote, tu vas bien?
