How do I write a strong introduction?

The introduction is often seen as an annoying hurdle, but it is crucial in giving the marker a strong first impression. Writing an unclear intro that considers a few possible arguments or approaches but does not state its direction can lead on to an unclear essay. To avoid these pitfalls, planning is key. Before starting the introduction, ensure you have bullet-pointed a rough idea of what each paragraph of your essay will focus on (even if just one theme or point). Once you have done this and know where your essay is leading and how you might conclude, your intro will be a lot easier.

This doesn't mean everything must be answered by the end of the introduction, you can suggest multiple interpretations you will explore. To avoid writing a bland introduction, consider using a quote or critical perspective that might draw out why your approach to this essay is an interesting one, and most importantly you should firmly state what your approach will be.
