The author, J B Priestley, creates a sense of tension in this extract from the play 'An Inspector Calls' in a number of different ways. First, the author creates a sense of pressure and anticipation by using punctuation that forces the reader to stop and start as the pace of the text quickens then slows. The use of dashes throughout the text, which results in character speech breaking then restarting abruptly, gives the impression that something bad is about to happen.
