What message is the authour attempting to get across in this chapter?

When trying to analyse what an authour is attempting to do, it is important to not only to look at the type of language and literary techiques they have used, but also the context in which they are writing in. While the language will certainly paint a picture of the current surrounding and the emotions characters are experiencing, the context in which the novel was written provides a reason behind the inclusion of this event in the story, poem or play as it is likely influenced by the political or cultural climate of the time. An example of this can be the description of the monster in mary Shelly's Frankenstein, while the language presents the image of a horrific, terrifying creature the context means that we know that the monster is a critique of science going to far from Shelly, who wrote during the Age of Enlightenment and through her upbringing had many scientific connections such as Lord Byron.
