Compare and contrast the rise to power of Stalin and Mao from an economic aspect.

Both dictators could exploit the weakness of their opposition caused by economic factors. Mao used the unwillingness of the GMD ( Chinese Nationalist Party ) to create economic reforms to advocate his ideas. This situation was even more enhanced by hyperinflation and monetary crisis that showed the absolute incompetence of the government. The russian economic sitation was also favoring for Stalin, since his rise to power period was simultanious with the economic NEP vs. Rapid industrialization debate within the party. Due to the fact that this question caused a significant divison within the party, Stalin exploited the situation by always favoring the side he needed support from.
