Design of experiments to test hypothesis about factors affecting germination.

Firstly outline the factors needed for seed germinination:
There are 3 essential conditions required for a seed to germinate - a seed will not germinate until these external conditions are met . They are:
Warmth – enzyme activity (enzymes work best at an optimum temperature - this requires enzyme and substrate to move around at a rate which many successful collisions can occur. Water – (to rehydrate seed and soften the testa (the harder coating of the seed) and allow the pumule to emerge Oxygen - (required for aerobic respiration) Needed for ATP production.
Experimental design required two treatments: The control experiment where all factors are present and then seperate experiments which ommits one of the factors. (ie everything except water is present). Therefore you can deduce that if the seed doesn’t grow then that factor ommited must be required for germination.
Then you would explain how you would set up your two treatments - with aid of a diagram if you felt it aided your explanation.Read the question thoroughly sometimes diagrams are necessary sometimes they are optional!
Control Experiment Place apple seeds in a test tube on a moist cotton pad and seal with a bung (with hole in to allow oxygen to be replenshed. Place in warm closed enviroment controlled by a thermostat to ensure that temperature remains stable.
Set up an indeticle experiment in another test tube but omit one factor.
To remove oxygen you can add Alkaline pyrogallol To remove of water don't add water to the experiment To reduce temperature place in the freezer
Describe the control factors variables such as using the same species of plant, same amount of water, same wavelength of light etc. There must only be one independent variable (thing you change) otherwise this would negatively effect the validity of your result. Describe how you would ensure that control variable would remain constant.
