How do effectively read a poem?

First read the poem once and, if you can, read it aloud. Then, think to yourself: What is the poet trying to say? Note down some initail thoughts if you can. Then, go in for a second read. This time take your pen or highlighter and highlight aspects of the poem that interest you. Try to find three to five things.Next, zoom in on each of your points. What is being said? Are there any techniques being used here? (Metaphor, Simile, Embjambment, Ceasura, etc. )If you find any techniques, what do they say about the poem?
