What is a stereotype threat?

A stereotype threat is one of many ways in which observers may cause others to confirm stereotypes. For instance, when boys and girls are reminded of their gender before writing a math test, girls will score worse than they would normally. The same applies to race. When people are asked about their race before writing an intelligence test, white people end up with better results than black people, even though they would have similar scores otherwise.
