No. Think of an x as a tangible object, for instance an apple. If you have an apple plus another apple, you have 2 apples. Therefore if you have an x you have 1x. 1x plus another 1x is 2x, not x^2.

First of all it is using the factor theorem. 

so need to use that to show it is a factor 

We do this by P of (-3) should = 0 

So substitute x with -3
