What is the difference between mitosis and meiosis?

Mitosis is used for growth, repair and asexual reproduction whereas meiosis results in the production of gametes needed for sexual reproduction. Mitosis creates 2 cells with diploid chromosomes but meiosis forms 4 cells with haploid chromosomes. The cells created by meiosis are genetically varied unlike the cells formed by mitosis which are genetically identical.
