How is a root hair cell specialised to its function?

Root hair cells have a very large surface area due to them being very long and having hair like projections. This allows more active transport of mineral ions to take place so the plant is able to take in as many important mineral ions as possible e.g. nitrates. They are also filled with many mitochondria so they are very well specialised for active transport of mineral ions from the soil and into the roots. This is because the mitochondria provide energy (in the form of ATP) which is used to drive the active transport of the mineral ions against their concentration gradient. Active transport requires energy to happen and mitochondria provide this energy.
