How should you structure an essay at GCSE?

Whether you write it at the beginning or end of the exam, a strong and concise introduction is essential for your essay. This should be followed by 3-5 paragraphs, each ideally following the PEEL structure. A paragraph should start with a topic sentence explaining your key Point. Next, carefully chosen Examples from the text you are discussing should be included. The second E is Explain: this should analyse the quote and link it back to the Point you made at the beginning of the paragraph. Finally, Link the paragraph back to the exam question. Once you've written the main body, round off the essay with a conclusion which reiterates the main points you have made and provides your final answer to the question.
