How would you work out the price of a trip if it is usually £24 but a man has a railcard that gives him 30% off?

In order to work out 30% off something you can use two methods. I'll explain both.

Method one:

  1. Work out 30% of the total price. This would be the same as working out 10% (dividing by 10 = £2.40) and multiplying the result by 3 (because 10*3 = 30). This would give £2.40 * 3 = £7.20.

Note: If working out 10% is difficult, this can be explained as dividing by 10, or moving the decimal point one place.

  1. Subtract this number from the total original price to find out how much the new price would be. £24 - £7.20 = £16.80. This calculation can be done using a variety of methods: subtracting 7 first, then 0.2; column subtraction.

Method two:

  1. '30% off' is the same as paying 70% of the original price because 100% - 30% = 70%.

  2. You would work out 10% of the total ticket price (£2.40) and multiply this by 7 because (107 = 70). The answer is therefore £2.407 = £16.80

Note: If multiplication by 7 is difficult. You can add 2.40 + 2.40 + 2.40 + 2.40 + 2.40 + 2.40 + 2.40 = 16.80 to check your work. However, this is a much longer route.
