Explain why a balanced diet is important for health and what a balanced diet consists of.

A balanced diet is one that contains the correct balance of different food groups to avoid malnourishment. Carbohydrates are required for energy release to the body, proteins are used in the body for growth and repair, fats are required for insulation and energy release and vitamins and minerals are needed for the healthy functioning of the body and immune system. For example, vitamin D is required in the body to help absorb calcium, required for strong bones.
