Name two types of chemical bonds and describe each type in terms of their bonding structure and properties

Ionic Bonding

Ionic bonding occurs between positive ions (cations) and negative ions (anions), which are attracted to each other through their oppisite charges. The resulting compound is reffered to as an ionic compound. Within the compound, both ions are surrounded by oppositley charged ions and are held within a lattice structure. This type of bonding is very strong, resulting in high temperatures needed to break the lattice.

Covalent Bonding

Covalent bonding involves the sharing of electrons between individual atoms; this type occurs between two atoms of the same element or of elements close to each other in the periodic table, therfore having similar chemical properties. This bonding usually occurs between nonmetals but can also be seen between nonmetals and metals
