Suggest what happens in heart muscle cells when the coronary artery gets blocked.

'Coronary' refers to heart, and coronary arteries supply heart muscle cells with blood. Firstly consider why we need to transport blood around the body? Blood carries many essential nutrients and components that our cells and tissues need to respire. What are they? Oxygenated blood carries oxygen to the cells, glucose is absorbed from the gut into the blood stream and gets transported to the cells. Oxygen and glucose are necessary components for respiration, the process of releasing energy for cells to perform their functions.  When the coronary artery gets blocked, for example by a blood clot, the heart cells are less able to aerobically respire due to decreased delivery of oxygen and glucose. There is more anaerobic respiration which results in lactic acid production, which results in heart pain known as angina. If the coronary artery is totally blocked, the heart muscle gets damaged and eventually dies, resulting in a heart attack.
