What was the importance of harpsichord in the Baroque era?

One of the most important musical feature of the Baroque era was the use of harpsichord. Indeed, harpsichord is a keyboard instrument, which is very similar to a piano. Some of its important features are listed below:1) It has no sustain pedal, so harpsichordists are able to use ornamental melodic features, such as trills to lengthen the notes and keep the harmony still. 2) Harpsichordists can be the soloists. 3) They can provide chordal accompaniment by realising the figured bass. 4) They cannot provide dynamic contrast, but are able to play some dynamics: piano and forte.
