Many enzymes present in cells require a catalyst to aid their actions. Describe the role of a catalyst.

A catalyst acts to lower the activation energy of the reaction. It speeds up the reaction without being used up.Binding of the catalyst alters the tertiary structure of the enzyme, causing the active site to change shape. This allows more successful enzyme-substrate complexes to form per minute.
