What are the differences between mitosis and meiosis?

Meiosis occurs in the reproductive organs (the testes and ovaries) in order to produce gametes, whereas mitosis can occur in almost any cell type of the body.Meiosis results in four daughter cells being produced, whereas mitosis produces two daughter cells. The two daughter cells produced in mitosis are genetically identical to eachother and to the original cell, whereas the four daughter cells produced in meiosis are all genetically different from one another and the original cell.Mitosis is a single stage process, made up of one division, whereas meiosis involves two stages (reduction and division). The four daughter cells produced in meiosis are haploid (contain half the usual number of chromosomes), whereas the two daughter cells produced in mitosis are both diploid (contain the normal number of chromosomes).
