what is water potential?

Water potential is a measure of the tendency of water to move from one place or compartment to another. Water moves based on the water potential, from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential (through a semi-permeable membrane) The water potential in a cell is dependant on the solute present and the pressure potentials.
