8x – 7 > 6x + 12

Do not be daunted by the greater than sign. Just think of it like an equals sign.

Remember, the key is to get the 'x' on its own.

Collect the like terms as you normally would. As per convention, start with the 'x' terms. As they are both positive, take away the lower number from both sides.

8x – 7 > 6x + 12
8x – 6x – 7 > 6x – 6x + 12
2x – 7 > 12

Now, do the same with the numbers. As one number is negative, add this to both sides to cancel it out.
2x – 7 > 12
2x – 7 + 7 > 12 + 7
2x > 19

Now that you have all the x terms on one side and the number terms on the other side, you can sort this out.
Remember the 2x just means 2 multiplied by x. Thus, all you need to do is divide both sides by 2.

2x > 19
2 multiplied by x divided by 2 > 19 divided by 2
x > 19/2
x > 9.5
